NEW BOOKLET DELVES DEEP INTO MARIBYNONG RIVER

Did you know the Maribyrnong River:

  • Was originally called Saltwater River?
  • Has an annual flow of 120,000 million litres?
  • Is home to species numbering: 18 fish, 100 birds, 12 frogs, 290 plants?

Visitors to Maribyrnong River can become full bottle on the wildlife, geography and history of the waterway following the release of a free booklet.

Know Your River – Maribyrnong River traces the history of the 160-kilometre waterway and chronicles the many species of animals and plants that live there.

The 72-page publication also explains how stormwater pollution enters and affects the creek environment, how people can help protect the waterway, and Melbourne Water's flood protection role in the Maribyrnong catchment.

General Manager of Waterways, Chris Chesterfield, said the Maribyrnong was a valuable natural asset, which was reflected by the level of interest and support by volunteers who dedicated much time to helping look after the river.

"Our role is to improve the health, amenity and water quality of waterways, but we are also about engaging the community and being a source of information about local rivers and creeks," said Mr Chesterfield.

"Whether you visit Maribyrnong River to relax on the banks, walk the dog or have a spot of fishing, the booklet is a great resource to broaden people's knowledge of this local icon."

Sunbury Landcare Association member Ian Taylor said the community played a major part in ensuring the Maribyrnong remained a place of natural beauty.

"I've had a lifelong interest in the environment, and have had a satisfying time working on the Maribyrnong River with like-minded people and sharing knowledge with them," said Mr Taylor.

"Volunteering in a 'friends of' group or by holding working bees with family and friends are great ways to get involved.

"We've been active in caring for the Maribyrnong River through weed removal, revegetation and water quality monitoring."
